Mission
Christian Surfers Japan is part of an international organization run by Christians who surf. We hold a variety of activities including surfing camps, surf coaching, competitions, meetings, overseas homestay and surf trip opportunities. We provide a good clean environment for people to have fun, meet friends and learn more about God. We see ourselves as a bridge between the beach community and the church. Anyone interested in surfing is welcome to come along: guys, girls, surfers, bodyboarders, non-Christians and Christians. Please come and check it out.
Groundswell 2010 Report
by David Levey
2009 marks a significant milestone for Christian Surfers Japan. It was back in 1999 that the first CSJ mission was started on the beaches of Shonan by three missionaries: Shinko Fujimoto, Robert Roche and David Levey. At that time very few Japanese surfers had ever heard of Christian Surfers or the good news of Jesus and his message of hope, forgiveness and love.
Now, a decade later we have around 5 missions around the coastlines of Japan regularly outreaching to the surfers of their local communities. We have seen 7,000 copies of the Surfers Bible printed. Close to 10,000 Outsiders and other Christian surf DVD’s passed out. Countless surf movie premier nights, surf coaching lessons, camps, surf trips, homestays, and Bible studies have been run. We have held contests, served at high profile contests. Have even appeared on TV sharing our testimonies twice, had articles and ads in newspapers, and surf magazines. Through all this we have seen the gospel go out to many thousands of Japanese surfers.
All this has been done in response to Jesus’ command to “Go into all the world and preach the good news of Jesus.” (Mark 16)
On reflecting on the last 10 years God has done some amazing things. It’s nice to sit down and reflect on his faithfulness. But do we stop here? No we have just started. This year I believe God is leading us to keep “Moving Ahead”. If we are to really reach our vision of “Christian Surfers Japan being a Christian presence and witness to the whole surf community in Japan” we need to keep moving forward. With around 2 million surfers in Japan we still have a ways to go.
The Lord has been speaking to me this year through the story of Joshua. God had promised the Israelites a place of their own - a land flowing with milk and honey. Moses lead them to the edge of the land but it was Joshua that lead them in to take their inheritance. They were camped at the edge of the Jordan. Things were good there and even two and a half tribes of Israel decided to stay there. But the land God promised was over the river. They were faced with a challenge. Stay where they were or step into the river and take the land that God had promised them. It was only when they took the step and their feet touched the water that River Jordan stopped flowing and allowed the people to cross over into their inheritance. (Joshua 1-3)
I believe we as CSJ are at a similar point. We can stay where we are and rest here being content with the things we have done. Or step out into the real inheritance God has for us.
This year on our 10th Anniversary we want to thank God for his goodness, thank each of you for your support and faithfulness. And let’s all be “Moving Ahead” into all that God has promised for us.
