Americas Conference

In 2007 the North American and the South American regions came together for the first ever Latin American Conference held in Jaco, Costa Rica. See the attached photo of the attending CS leaders from Brazil, Peru, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador. Those who attend that conference were so encouraged we vowed to meet every two years.

The conference for 2009 will be held in El Salvador and we will change the name to "The Americas Conference" to reflect more the unity between North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The theme "Relationships" of this 2009 conference will focus on being committed to one another and committed to the Americas surfing community. We will spend four days seeking God’s blessing on our mission of reaching the Americas surfing community with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Seeking and building new relationships within the world surfing community
Obtain inspiration and strengthen our commitment to our mission

Conference itinerary:

Wednesday July 22 - Strategic planning and Leadership meeting for the International Director, Regional Coordinators and National Directors
Thursday July 23 through Saturday July 25 will be the general conference. There will be an inspirational speaker and each national director will have time to present what is happening in their country.
Friday July 24 In the afternoon the group will participate in a service project.
Monday July 20, Tuesday July 21 and Sunday July 26 Our host for the conference Salvador Castellanos will plan surf trips and additional mission activities for those who want to attend.

Jesus Pro Am presented by Bible Society NSW and Coastalwatch set to Celebrate its 25th year in style

The Jesus Pro Am presented by Bible Society and Coastalwatch will celebrate its 25th year in style when it returns to the iconic Manly Beach on May 2 and 3.

The Christian Surfers Australia (CSA) run event is shrouded in history with previous winners including current ASP World Tour surfers Phil McDonald and Amee Donohoe, big wave charger Mark Matthews and old school rippers Simon Law, Rob Page and Matt Cattle.

The Jesus Pro Am always attracts a strong line up of surfers across the 4 divisions and 2009 should be no exception with serious cash and prizes on the line set to attract NSW’s best male and female surfers.

The Open Men’s and Women’s winners will both walk away with $1000 cash with a 7-day Line Up surf trip to Samoa exclusively for the Men and a luxurious weekend away to Salamander Shores Resort at Salamander Bay for the Women.

The Cadet Boys and Girls will battle it out for their share in $500 cash along with a Misfit Shapes Surfboard for the Boys and MG Surfboard for the Girls division winner.

But the action won’t stop with the regulation contest heats, with 12 of the best surfers in the event being handpicked to take to the skies in the Invitational Air Show. The 20 minute extravaganza will see surfers go all out in their quest to land the most innovative aerial maneuver to take home $500 cash!

While the surfing is certain to be red hot all weekend, the Jesus Pro Am is no ordinary surfing contest. It is a major outreach tool aimed at connecting elite surfers and the wider surfing community with CSA and ultimately the Gospel of Jesus.

“Christian Surfers’ major goal is to be a Christian presence and witness in the Australian surfing community” said Christian Surfers’ Central NSW Regional Coordinator Al Westbury. “The Jesus Pro Am is a major outreach tool for elite surfers – surfers who are focused on competition and who aren’t generally connected with Christian Surfers missions along the coast.”

“Our major aim is to run a professional surfing event that engages elite surfers into continuing contact with Christian Surfers’ missions & ultimately local churches,” continued Westbury.

While 2009 heralds the event’s 25th year it will also see the establishment of a 3-event series following a partnership with Bible Society NSW as part of their Jesus, All About Life campaign.

The Jesus Pro Am Series will see the event travel to Coffs Harbour in August and at Wollongong in November, with plans for further events around Australia in 2010.

“We are very excited to be partnering with Bible Society NSW and the Jesus, All About life campaign,” said Westbury. “To establish a 3-event Jesus Pro Am Series will not only provide more opportunities for surfers to compete in the events, but more importantly introduce more surfers to the Gospel and person of Jesus.”

The Jesus Pro Am is renowned for being a professionally run event that still maintains a great family atmosphere with outstanding hospitality provided by a dedicated catering team made up of people from several local churches.

Additionally, the event will see Christian Surfers continue to partner with local charity Manly-Manado join forces to raise awareness and funds for the people of Manado, a village in Indonesia. Manly-Manado aims to educate, enable and unite residents in and around Manly to make a difference in the lives of people less fortunate living in Manado.

CHAPLAINCY UPDATE
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) approved chaplaincy to be part of its structure after our one-year trial in which 18 chaplains were mobilized to over 30 events. In addition, a men’s world tour chaplain, Abe Andrews, and a women’s world tour chaplain, Liselle Wilsnagh, were appointed and presented to the Surfers. Abe is 27 married, been a high school chaplain, current gold coast CS mission leaders and member of Beachside Surf Church. Liselle is 31, single, South African, a professional singer, has been in CS 15 years, and is currently worship leader in Goleta Vineyard Church, Santa Barbara, USA. Pray for them as they serve at their next event in Tahiti. Regional chaplains are being sought with Lyle Castellaw for North America, Mike Stangel for Hawaii, and Andy Pitt for Africa already in place. CS AUSTRALIA NATIONAL GATHERING
Australia just celebrated their 24th National Conference over Easter, rebranding it a ’gathering’ to reflect it’s grass roots down in Port Campbell, Victoria. 175 leaders and families turned up and Lena Johnstone spoke on ’Love one another and the world will know you are my disciples.’ Awesome waves, weather, company and vision under a big top tent!

TAIWAN!
Asia Regional Coordinator Richard Agius visited new contacts in Taiwan and discovered a booming surf culture. With a YWAM missionary and former CSNZ couple a new mission is poised to launch - Chinese surf mission!

WALKING ON WATER
WOW have partnered with CSI to roll out a world tour premiering their new film hoping to line up with world pro tour with destinations in Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, Japan, Taiwan, South Africa, Europe and more all planned. Contact WOW to join the tour.

ISA WORLD GAMES
Costa Rica hosts the world ISA surfing games. New National Director Cokey has already been appointed chaplain of their national team and is seeking a global team to practice hospitality to the games via a CS stall. MEXICO CONTEST OUTREACH
CS Mexico have a national contest coming to Puerto Escondido May 14-17. They have volunteered to help at this event by taking care of the beach cleanups. The organisers want to make it an eco-friendly event so CS will provide 8 sets of 3 bins in key locations along the beach area. One bin for plastics, one for organic materials, and one bin for non-organic rubbish. Each bin costs $30; each set will cost $90. All 24 will cost a total of $720. CS Mexico would like to provide these bins but don’t have sufficient funds to do so. In each bin location they will be able to advertise CS and speak about Jesus. CHAPLAINCY UPDATE
Brad Whittaker and Brett Davis joined with pastor Mike Stangel who was chaplain on the Hawaiian Triple Crown. "I was amazed at how open so many of the surfers were, even allowing me to pray with them" says Mike (it may have had something to do with death defying 12-15’ Sunset Beach!) A final approval by the ASP will take place at their launch meeting on the Gold Coast in late February. Current strategies are: a men’s and women’s CT (championship tour) chaplain; regional chaplain coordinators to mobilize event chaplains; and Brad continuing as international coordinator.

CHANGED LIFE: ABE ANDREWS
"I was born into a broken home filled with drugs and abuse. My mum separated from my biological father and remarried after giving her heart to the Lord. From then on my home was relatively normal and stable. At 15 my biological father died from related drug abuse, which left me lost and confused. I would have walked away from the Lord if it wasn’t for a few very influential mentors from Christian Surfers. They took me on camps and to Bible studies and without their input and support I would have quite easily fallen off the edge. Soon after that I started to trust in the Lord wholeheartedly. I had a passion to work in chaplaincy and God led me to be a chaplain at a local high school. I now run Gold Coast Christian Surfers and was the chaplain at the Quiksilver Pro WCT event in 2008. I’m married and living and for Christ wherever I am, doing the same thing for young people that those Christian Surfers mentors did for me when I was a grom."

Spanish Surfers Bible

To be printed and available in January, the Spanish Surfers Bible is an evangelistic NT with Latino testimonies as well as international surfing legends. United Bible Society is carrying 5000 of our stock in Miami, and the other 5000 will be distributed throughout CS groups globally as well as Spanish speaking Bible Societies. Cost to CS missions is $US2.50 each plus postage when ordered in minimum orders of 50 from CSI. More details to follow.

New English Surfers Bible Launch

The Media Launch for the new English Surfers Bible on October 31st saw a run of print, radio and internet promos going out. Surfing World Magazine have pledged to do a ’product review’ and take up 20 copies as free giveaways. Plans are in place to distribute the Bible to every surf shop in Australia, with them having the option of carrying it as a product item to sell. Further plans to distribute the Bible to key surfing accommodation centers for travelling surfers to read and steal!? Founder of the ’Surfpackers’ at Jeffrey’s Bay, father of Annerine and Jacques, husband of Corine, hunter, lover of lost surfers, big man with a big heart. Thousands of surfers made ’Surfpackers’ their home away from home; hundreds seriously considered Christ, dozens made decisions to follow Christ and be baptized. Irish National Conference

With 40 registered Steve Boal was stoked with the anticipation of a full National Conference. Imagine his surprise when 80 turned up, in Southern Ireland! God has been so honoring John McCarthy’s surf school and his testimony in pro surfing. Steve and Leslie have stepped out into full-time ministry as the Irish National Director and have much favor on the board of the Irish Surfing Association. Japanese National Conference

David Levey reports their biggest best National Conference ever with 70 in attendance and two becoming Christians over the weekend! "Next year is our 10th anniversary conference and God has been raising up local Japanese to take ownership of this mission all over the country," says Dave. A recent short term mission trip by CS Australia impacted Okinawa.

Chilean Surfers DTS

A new surfers Discipleship Training School will be run in the heart of Chilean surfing at Pichilemu next April through September, hosted by Mitch Anderson (CSI 2006 conference speaker). 12 weeks of lectures with daily surfing and local ministry will be followed by a mission phase interacting with surf contests and outreach in Peru and Chile. For those who haven’t heard, the new Walking on Water DVD is now available for purchase! WOW have set up multiple premieres with CS in Australia, NZ and other parts of the world, with more to come. You can order copies from the CSI website or directly from Walking on Water.

New Fiji Mission

Following up from an invitation from the Fijian Surfing Association CS New Zealand did a great short-term mission coaching emerging surfers in both surfing and Christian character. There are now two new chapters of CS being established under the leadership of Kris Stice and local lad Tuks, targeting villagers who are a mixed race of Fijian and Indian, typically rejected by others. They both attended the Pacific Regional Meeting held by new Pacific Coordinator Alan Vink before the CSNZ National Conference.

CS Portugal

Buck Waters is stoked to have moved from Florida as a missionary to Portugal and connect with CSP, "We started with just 4 in our surfers Bible study five weeks ago and there was 33 last night! In two weeks Zaca will become pastor of a missional surf church plant." CS Brazil leader Sergio will be guest speaker at their leadership conference end of November and boost relationships between the two nations.

Phillipines Connection

Newly appointed Asia Coordinator, Richard Agius, recently visited a contact in the Philippines. "There is certainly a growing indigenous surfing community, particularly out of Manila, and a strong Christian culture is over the place. The Philippines could become a surf missionary sending nation if they catch onto the CS vision." For more info contact Richard.

Peru Outreach - Jesus Aloha Contest

For the fourth year running a major ’Jesus’ outreach contest was held in Lima, Peru, this year over the weekend of November 16-17. Entries were full and the team worked amazing together. Aldo is stoked to see the leadership team consolidating and they continue with the support of the poor community in the north - see them in the new Walking on Water DVD.

Changed Life: Marquito Santos

"I started surfing when I was 8 years old. Surfing was much more than my sport, it was my life. I took part in several contests and trips and became quite successful. Though I was a religious surfer, I was trying to heal my heart with many superficial things, and more and more surf. In 1996 at 19-years-old, I discovered through meeting the Christian Surfers in Brazil that Christianity is not about a religion, it’s about a true and close relationship with the Lord of all creation. I could see true smiles on their faces and I wanted to know Jesus for myself. Since I became a disciple, many things have changed. I trained at seminary and today I’m a ’surfer pastor’. I am competing in contests, sharing the gospel all over Brazil and have a vision to help pioneer CS missions in South America with my wife Candida and my son Joao Marcos."

New Surfers Bible launched at ‘home’ of Christian Surfers

After six years, popular Surfers Bible expands into three new editions with FREE DVD

Three new editions of the popular Surfers Bible were launched today at the ‘home’ of Christian Surfers, Cronulla Beach.

“Christian Surfers was founded here in 1977,” said Christian Surfers International Director, Brett Davis. “We had our first ministry house on the site of Rydges Hotel but like that hotel chain, our organisation has also spread around the world including the USA, UK, Brazil, Peru, Portugal, Japan, Tahiti, South Africa, Indonesia and New Zealand,” he said.

The first Surfers Bible was released in 2002 in association with Bible Society and since then, 75,000 copies have been sold around the world. At today’s launch, three new editions were released, the New Testament, the complete Bible and a Gospel of Mark. Each publication contains stories of well known Christians surfers – some of whom were at today’s event. Two of the new products contain a DVD featuring a surfing documentary shot in Nias, an island off Indonesia.

“Some people have commented that Christian Surfers is an oxymoron like ‘smart bomb’ or ‘military intelligence’ because they think that Christians and surfers live opposite lifestyles,” said Brett. “But surfers have a really strong connection with nature and the waves and we want to introduce them to the wave creator – the God of the Bible,” he said.

Daniel Willis, CEO of Bible Society NSW, spoke about the impact of the original release and hoped that the three new editions would make a similar impact around the world. “We are proud to have supported the DVD that is included with the New Testament and Bible editions that shows Christian surfers in action,” he said.

Brad Whittaker, one of the featured surfers in the Bible and New Testament and also the director of the DVD said that in addition to the surfing documentary, the DVD also contained screen savers and personal stories from each of the seven surfers who went to Nias.

“Not only is there some great surfing footage, we also show the surfers in action as they worked with local Nias communities building wells and community centres,” he said.

Surfers Bible Official Launch

The official launch of the brand new English Surfers Bible will be held Friday, October 31 at Manly Beach, Sydney, Australia.

During the day there will be a media and retail launch held on the beach at 11am, with a fundraiser dinner following in the evening at St Matthew’s from 7:00pm-10:00pm. Featured surfers Brad Whittaker and Brenden Newton will attend both events, along with Christian Surfers International Director Brett Davis. The evening will also include the Australian premiere of Christian Surfers’ first ever film production, Nias Rediscovered. Seats are limited.

New English Surfers Bible

Six years ago, Bible Society and Christian Surfers International (CSI) published the first Surfers Bible. It was an instant hit on the surfing scene with some remarkable results.

“I was in hospital after a severe surfing accident and the only thing I had to read was the Surfers Bible,” said professional bodyboarder, Glenn Thurston.

“By the end of my recovery I had not only healed of my injury, but I had come to a faith in Christ,” he said. First published in 2002, the Surfers Bible has had amazing success with over 75,000 copies distributed around the world.

“Surfing is growing at a phenomenal rate all over the world and has become a world youth icon synonymous with excitement, freedom and a way of connecting with nature,” said Brett Davis, Christian Surfers International Director.

“However, the catch is that surfers tend to worship the creation rather than the creator. In fact Australians are more likely to surf than attend church regularly, so it is vital to connect with them and help them,” Brett said.

With this in mind, CSI partnered with Bible Society to produce the original Surfers Bible and now with the latest release, more Surfers Bible.

“We have now produced a second edition of the New Testament Surfers Bible, a complete Surfers Bible including the Old Testament in a surfer friendly waterproof zip cover and The Surfers Guide to God, a pocket-sized Gospel of Mark,” said CSI Operations Manager, Aaron Hughes.

In keeping with the surfing media trend of providing a surfing DVD with related surfing magazines, the new Surfers Bible includes a free DVD, featuring a surfing documentary shot on a surfing trip to Nias in Indonesia in mid-2007. The DVD features top-line surfers, including WCT surfer Glyndyn Ringrose, one-armed wonder woman Bethany Hamilton, bodyboarder Brendan Newton, longboarders Brad Whittaker and Kiwi Kirk Beyer, along with American Fuel TV ‘On Surfari’ couple Shayne and Shannon McIntyre and Hawaiian up-and-comer Kahana Kalama.

“We wanted to share a ‘faith in action’ story of these surfers using their surfing to help the tsunami affected areas of Indonesia,” says film director Brad Whittaker.

“The idea is that readers will become interested in the lives of these well known surfers, read their testimony in the Bible then read the Bible for themselves.”

What an amazing gathering of the tribe of CSI as 150 delegates from 16 nations descended on Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa. The pre-conference Council Meeting brought about the agreement of our key strategies: building national movements, leadership development, short term missions, hospitality/servanthood, chaplaincy and international support. Also approved at the meeting were the new Board of Directors for CSI, which consists of Marcus Judge, Jonathan Mak, Brett Davis, Brad Whittaker, Gill Davis, Linda Harding, Francois Basson, Stewart Hunt, Tim Oyston and Steve Bligh. Brad Whittaker has been our pioneer international chaplain coordinator. So far over 20 ASP events have had some 12 different chaplains present including three women’s events. A strategy is being developed to submit to the ASP in October for a longer-term future. Pray that God raises up the right people to carry this on and gives favor to CS as the ASP partner in this. JESUS SURF CLASSIC UK

"This year’s Jesus Surf Classic UK ranks among the best in its 16 year history!" Phil Williams, UK National Director

With over 150 volunteers from Christian Surfers around the country, CSUK made sure this year’s Jesus Surf Classic UK had a great atmosphere. The surf was some of the best the local lifeguards had seen in 4 months, the sun shone, and the skate park was so popular, with two great comps. Over 140 of the UK’s top surfers took part, and the standard of surfing was simply top class. Testimonies were shared through out the weekend, and at least 5 people made commitments for the first time - it was amazing! Visit the CSUK website for full report and photos.

PANAMA VISION

Over the past four years George Moreno and a handful of Christian surfers have been dreaming and planning a long term surf mission. As well as the typical local mission and events, they see emerging surf tourism as a special opportunity. Land has been purchased at Santa Catalina with a view of developing a surf eco accommodation and ministry centre. Travelling surfers will provide the business, locals will be employed and a surf ministry to both locals and travelers will take place. The guys hope that this model could be repeated at other Panamanian surf spots. Christian Lama has moved from CS El Salvador to become their National Director.

CHANGED LIFE - RICHARD ’SNOEK’ LEONARD

As a young surfer growing up around the Durban surfing area Richard was used to all the common distractions and temptations that surfing brought. There was the added challenge of avoiding the potential violence not only in the water but out of it as well. Meeting up with some ’Son Surf’ (Christian Surfers South Africa) guys was life-changing for Richard. "I had some Christian awareness and background but the Son Surf guys were crazy surfers and crazy Christians that lived a full tilt lifestyle that was appealing and challenging. Within just a year and a half I had given my surfing to God and ended up away from the coast as a missionary for 3 years! God really burnt that desire to put surfing first right out of me!" Richard grew in his leadership through this time and the opportunities created by CS and has recently stepped up as the new national director of Son Surf clubs. "CS changed my life and I want to use this ministry to change the lives of others." Richard is now married to Sam and relocated to the J-Bay national office earlier this year.

Jesus Surf Classic UK

The 16th running of the ‘Jesus Surf Classic’, was held over the weekend of 13th and 14th September in near perfect conditions. The semi finals and finals on the Sunday saw light winds and solid 4ft swell, in bright and sunny conditions. Croyde bay once again was the venue for this long running and very successful event organised by Christian Surfers UK.

The ‘Jesus’ due to its increasing popularity was split again this year between the traditional event at Croyde, and the Jesus Longboard Classic to be held at Polzeath over the weekend of October 19th and 20th. With entries restricted to 140 contestants the event filled up very quickly, especially as the surf forecast improved as the week running up to the event went on.

Conditions for the seven categories started off on Saturday morning with a slight off shore wind and sets of around 2ft, and bright warm sunshine. With two peaks running throughout the day, progress was swift, and by the end of the first day all categories were run to the semi final stage.

As well as a very busy schedule in the water on Saturday, activity around the contest site and marquee were equally as busy with a ‘big move’ skate contest taking place on Christian Surfers mobile skatepark.

Sunday dawned with very light winds and an increasing groundswell, especially on the incoming tide, which saw some outstanding surfing in all the age categories, as Croyde offered up some low tide classic conditions.

The Youth event ( Under 14 ) had the highest number of entrants so far with 32 entered, which is a great pointer to the health of the future of British Surfing. The final was between 3 Cornish based surfers, and a travelling competitor from Bournemouth. In a tight final Miles Lee-Hargeaves from Bournemouth took the title ahead of Bude’s Jobe Hariss, and Newquay surfers Harry Timson and Sam Harwood.

In the Junior Women’s division ( Under 18 ) there was a new name on the trophy with Sophie Sainsbury from Port Isaac winning ahead of Tassy Swallow, Gabbi Rowe and Croyde’s Karma Worthington.

Josh Daniel from Hayle, was 4th in the cadets ( U16 ) , just beaten by Newquays Tom Good, but the division was won by Croyde local Alex Baker , ahead of Toby Donachie, who was surfing in 3 events all weekend.

In the Men’s Junior (U18 ) final Stuart Campbell surfed really well to hold off Toby Donachie in 2nd, Jack Whitefield in 3rd and Marcus Lascelles in 4th.

The women’s final saw Beth Mason improve on her 2nd place last year, by winning, with some great power surfing. She was pushed all the way by Sophie Hellyer in 2nd, Tassy Swallow in 3rd and Karma Worthington.

The Masters final ( Over 35’s ) saw some new names in the final with some great surfing throughout, this year saw Bude surf Paul Barlow taking victory, ahead of Mike Plackett, Steve Harvey ( Just back from France the day before ) and South Wales Rob Poutney.

The final event of the day was an amazing final between 4 top class surfers in the Open Final. Travelling New Zealand surfer Luke Hughes did well to reach the final, but ended up 4th behind Lyndon Wake, in his first Jesus Surf Classic final. Top two places went to the Ash brothers with Reubyn peaking in the semi final which saw a near perfect wave by him where he pulled an insane aerial 360, then followed it up with 4 big turns. He just failed to defeat Joss, who retained his 2007 title and his £250 cheque with a mixture of power surfing and aerials throughout the heats.

With over 100 Christian Surfers volunteers supporting the event there were lots going on throughout, and the marquee area was the venue for the presentation on late Sunday afternoon. Joss thanked the Organisers for putting on ‘another great event’ and Phil Williams ( Contest Director ) thanked God for an amazing weekend of waves, sunshine and a great atmosphere between all the competitors and helpers.

Just after everything had been dismantled the heavens opened and it rained for 8 hours, what great timing!!

Andre Le Roux Fund

29 Aug 2008

After a very sudden and rapid bout of cancer, Andre Le Roux was promoted to glory on August 13, 2008. Pioneer of the ’Surfpackers’ at J-Bay, Andre and his wife Corrine hosted over 2000 surfers per year from many nations in a unique backpackers/mission/business. ’Your home away from home’ was their catch cry and many can testify to this. They led many to Christ and were a great partner of CSI. Andre is survived by 10-year-old Aniline and 23-year-old Jacques. CS Africa Regional Coordinator Roy Harley spoke at the funeral on Saturday August 16th and preached the gospel as Andre would have had it. Andre is now truly home.

A fund has been set up to assist the family through this time.

Cape St Francis is a tranquil eco-destination. This pristine beach, the mild temperature and the longest sunshine hours on the South African Coast ensure a relaxed all year round destination. There are wild life parks nearby so you can cuddle lion cubs, chase elephants or wander with Giraffes. ‘Endless Summer’ 1 & 2, feature St Francis’ famous right hand point. CSI 8TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
With just 10 weeks to go, Roy Harley and team have put together a great conference. Guest speaker Shane Claiborne has recently released his new book, ’Jesus For President’. Mike Barrett, CSUS leader and author of ’Danger Habit’ is also confirmed to share a session. Sergio reports 20 Brazilians are amping to go, CSNZ has launched a fundraising drive for its team, Shinko Levey is looking at the long journey from Japan and Luis and Tommy from Venezuela have booked in faith "...it seems impossible in our economy but we believe God wants us to attend." Plenty of amazing opportunities surrounding the conference from game parks to township tours...oh and Roy says "Supertubes was 4ft and clean with just 6 guys out the other day!" CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are our number one financial need! $US400 will secure someone like Made to attend. "Made is 20. He was our first Christian Surfer from the island of Bali and is on staff with us now. This conference will be absolutely life changing for him and way beyond anything he would ever get to do from his poor background" says Ado. There is currently leadership struggling to attend conference from Peru, Brazil, Venezuela and other nations. Assistance with travel is another huge need with climbing fuel costs. MISSION FIJI
Over May a 10 person team from CSNZ, Australia, USA and Portugal served the Fijian Surfing Association and local communities in a unique way. They humbly served, running learn-to-surf lessons for the Association and training more advanced members in surfing technique and competition performance. Time was also spent in a classroom situation teaching judging techniques before holding a surf comp to put this training into practice. The desire to form a CS group in Fiji was also expressed and the team was able to bless this group with resources and boards. EL SALVADOR EXPANSION
Salvador Castellanos reports "Here in CS El Salvador, things are going fast and great with now 3 chapters with almost 100 kids every week. We had a recent donation of a lot to build our first CS camp. We sent out our first short term missionaries Marcelo in Argentina and Christian in Panama." CANADIAN CONFERENCE
Evan Jones writes "I come from Montreal where the surf population has gone from 3 to 200 in a matter of 3 years, not to mention the other coasts. Surfing in Canada is setting a pace so fast that God is calling us to prospect HIS kingdom and to use our surfboards as our communicator. We are hosting our first annual national conference to unite the Canadian surf ministry, get a strategy, pray and train in leadership...oh and surf the standing wave on the rapids of St Lawrence, Montreal!" JAPAN SUMMER OF MISSION
Each year Christian Surfers Japan and Australia partner with Walking on Water for an exciting outreach to the massive unreached surfers of Japan. This September a team will head over to the tropical Okinawa Islands in the very south of Japan. CHANGED/ING LIFE - CHRIS ZANKO
Growing up in the northern suburbs of Wollongong on Australia’s beautiful East Coast, 15 year-old Zanko (the Chris part of his name isn’t used often), would find it easy to cruise through life. With great surf walking distance from his house, popularity at school and a healthy part-time job there isn’t much for him to worry about. It would be easy to fall into the usual traps of the drink, drugs and girls, also without much concern. Zanko has recently chosen to make something more of his life, however. Ditching the social norms and seeking a higher power is uncommon and the harder road to walk, but he has made this decision. He claims his local CS group is the catalyst for this. An avid bodyboarder, he has spent the last three years a part of the group, heading along every Monday night for the usual activity, hearing of this Jesus fellow along the way. Despite being open to the Lord through these years, the real change came after attending the CS Australia National Conference in Easter this year. The worship, fellowship and community inspired Zanko and, while he’s still just a cheeky grommet at heart, he’s given that heart to Jesus to shape and mould with plenty of years ahead.

ASP CHAPLAINCY UPDATE
CSI is currently developing an exciting new initiative, in conjunction with Sports Chaplaincy Australia, for the Association of Surfing Professionals. It will involve the formation of a Sports Chaplaincy Model for all levels of the ASP. Throughout 2008 CSI will coordinate trained chaplains to be at a range of ASP events with a presentation given to the ASP board in September, outlining how the trial has unfolded. It is hoped that the ASP will embrace the findings of the trial and approve a more formal model for 2009. The Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast was the launching pad for this year’s trial with CSI planning to be at a range of other key ASP events this year. ’Sporting clubs, whether at the grass roots or high performance level, recognise that that there is a need to care for athletes’ identifies Cameron Butler of SCA. ’They have different parts of their lives - vocational areas, family and relational areas as well as a spiritual need.’ CSI has developed a holistic approach to its chaplaincy proposal for the ASP which is planned to ensure individual needs are catered for no matter what the background or beliefs of the athletes, staff and officials. The service will be funded externally of the ASP to ensure the model reflects a heart to serve and give, freely drawing on CSI’s global networks and volunteer supporter base. BRAZIL OUTREACH
Surfistas de Cristo (CS Brazil) leader Marquitos Santos and Olie Boyer from CS Australia recently returned from a short-term mission to Fernando de Noronha where they spent 12 days on the island building relationships with the local surfers through servanthood and sharing the gospel with them. They were able to share with many local lifeguards, on the radio and even preach in a local church, which many surfers attended. All of this was during the 5-star WQS Hang Loose Contest, at which they also premiered the new Brazilian Christian surf film, The King (www.theking1.com.br) with pros from the movie present. CS AUSTRALIA NATIONAL CONFERENCE
This year’s CSA National Conference was held in the amazing Margaret River region of West Australia. Over 100 leaders from CS nationwide showed up with solid crews from Queensland and WA. CSA Board Member, Stuart Wesley, dynamically spoke on the function of the Holy Spirit in our lives, while great times of fellowship, worship, communion and an unforgettable time of group confession highlighted an amazing Easter weekend. The annual tradition of the floating cross, preceded by a dawn service on Easter Sunday was again carried out, this year in the Yallingup lagoon. Visit the CSA website for more info.

REVISED SURFERS BIBLE

SOUTH ISLAND GATHERING
CS New Zealand had a great turn out for the first South Island Mini Conference/Gathering held in Christchurch. Members came from Dunedin, the West Coast of the South Island, and Wellington along with strong local support and hospitality from Christchurch. There were also representatives from Hamilton, Raglan, Snowboarders for Christ, and contacts were made with YWAM (skating ministry). Excellent one-day intense leadership training and team building by keynote speaker and interim Pacific Regional Coordinator for CSI, Alan Vink, set the tone for the first leadership development program. CSUK BOARD WEEKEND
The CSUK Board of Trustees met in early February at Polzeath, for their first ever weekend away; visioning, priority setting, and team building. One of the key areas of focus for 2008 was highlighted as the development and longevity of local core groups. "My name is Bradley Jones and I am involved in a ministry called Son Skate www.sonsk8.co.za, which is a part of Son Surf South Africa! (Christian Surfers SA) I have been a Christian for a good few years and there is still something that absolutely amazes me about God and his love for us! The simple truth that he loves us so much! When I was growing up there was lots of things that got me through the day, skating, drinking, kissing girls...all of them made me feel great, at least while I was doing them! The problem came when I was alone. You see everything that gave me acceptance was directly related to how much I was putting into it! If I was skating lots I felt like I was on top of the world! If I was drunk I felt great! As long as I was giving of myself I was getting in return! Then came Christ, someone that would love me because I was wonderfully made! Christ wanted nothing from me, I had nothing to give! Christ accepts us as we are! There is a scripture that says ’I love because he first loved me’. To this day I am still blown away by how great God’s love for me must be! I can’t comprehend it!!! The reason I do things for Christ now is because of his love for me! Not because I have to but because I want to and because I need to!"

I run a surf school on the west coast of Ireland and try to recruit Christian Surfers for the months of June(half)/July/August to come over on a mission/work basis.

If you know any one who is a SOLID Christian who would be interested in coming over sharing the gospel/working in the school and surfing for the summer please ask them to get in touch with us.

There is an interview process and all that but it would be great to hear from anyone you may know that would be interested.

The main jobs available are as a surf coach but we also could possibly hire someone in administration. To coach you need a to obtain two surfing qualifications which you can do here in May and get a work visa which is usually possible.

ASP Chaplaincy Trial

Maroubra Surfers Church pastor, Steve Bligh, will be the first official ASP chaplain at the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast. The ASP has agreed to partner with CSI in trialling chaplaincy on the first two events of the 2008 WCT world tour. Please pray for this.

ASP CHAPLAINCY TRIAL
After a year of negotiation, the ASP will trial the concept of a chaplain on the WCT tour for 2008. Chairman Richard Grellman says, "We see the need for more wholistic support for both surfers and staff and CSI is a trusted group to help facilitate this." After some years of quiet, God has moved a number of surfing missionaries to Hossegor, France. Thomas Fedder is stoked to pioneer his board repair business. The Parenty missionary family from Australia have joined the Fedders and are looking to open a surf cafe. Francesca from UK is also moving to be available. CHANGED LIFE - MADE
"I grew up in a very poor family and decided to leave home at the age of 8 years old to find work but ended up living on the streets of Kuta, selling bracelets to tourists in nightclubs. One day I was approached by some Christians who had a street kid ministry and they offered to send me to school in Java. Although my heritage is Hindu I was raised within a Christian environment at an orphanage in Java. I still had to make my own decision about Christ and did so when I was 13. Several years later I returned to Bali and lived at an orphanage for street kids in Kuta. In Bali I learnt to skate and became a keen surfer. God led me to Ado and he shared about the ministry of Christian Surfers, which really made me excited. I was amazed when I saw the youth centre. Ado and Clair took me on as a volunteer, and invited me to come and live at the centre and serve on their team, as well as be the caretaker of the youth centre. This is now my job while I also finish year 12 at school. I get to skate and surf with the other Hindu kids and, even better, share the good news of Jesus. God is so good, this is more than I could ever have imagined!" Made, 20, joined CS Bali on staff in 2006. It has been an exciting year, with the HWP program proving the backbone of financial support for LEAP and in so doing enabling them to continue transforming the lives of those in need. I personally had the opportunity to join a group in early October, scoring some great waves, and was also blown away by the progress made by LEAP in the 12 months I was absent.

We have already had a number of bookings for HWP in 2008, those in the know taking advantage of the specials offered in the attachment. There have been a number of changes to the HWP pricing structure, with the intention of enabling more people to be involved whilst also increasing the support given to LEAP.
