This week’s Living Water from @christiansurfers_us ・・・ LIVING WATER: Worst Wins by JW Kaiser Gotta be honest with you all: I've been surfing pretty good lately. I have a good board under my feet, and I've been feeling darn good about it. Until this weekend. This weekend I was at a pro contest. I paddle out, just outside of the contest zone to catch a few waves. I was surrounded by surfers so good that it looked like a sticker factory exploded nearby and rained down sponsorships on everyone but me. Comparing my surfing to the super groms and pros near me was enough to bring me back the the reality that my surfing is still not to my silly expectations. Comparing yourself to people usually isn’t a healthy exercise. Comparison is the thief of joy. However comparison can be helpful when you compare yourself to Jesus and to the biblical standards set forth for Christ followers. Paul said it best while writing to his young friend Timothy, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: 'Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.'” Paul can say this with confidence because he was so focused on Jesus that he knew where he stacked up compared to the holiness of Jesus. Comparing himself helped Paul know the depth of his own sin. In other words, Paul knew he wasn’t hitting the mark Jesus calls us all to in actions, thoughts and words. But, here is where knowing you are the worst actually leads to a win: Paul goes on, “But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.” Eternal life! That sounds like best prize ever! I’ll take it. So, join me in comparing yourself to Jesus and knowing that His saving grace and love wins the day for us! We are like Paul, the worst. But we also win, in Christ. This is the Gospel, the Good news. No sponsor stickers required.
Join us this week in praying for CS Mexico: “In recent years surfers in Mexico have turned back to God through the use of simple Discovery Bible Studies. These new believers are being discipled and taught how to be obedient to Jesus, including joining us in reaching their families and friends with the message of the gospel. There are many others around Mexico who desire to do likewise. Pray for wisdom in establishing more impact around the country, for followers of Jesus to follow him and regularly share the gospel with the lost and for surfers to be obedient to the teachings of Jesus.” #everysurfer
Join us this week in praying for @cs_elsalvador: “It has been a season of growth for the ministry, a season where we have been walking towards the will of God and learning every step we take. The Lord has walked with us all through this path, taking us to new places and connecting people from all over the world with a heart for the kingdom and love for surfers. It has been a challenge, but with a lot of prayer and guidance from God, we’ve been able to move forward with our mission, to bring the light and love of Jesus to the beach and to all the surfers. Pray for the strengthening of existing chapters in El Majahual and El Zonte. Pray for unity amongst our surfers and the whole surf community. Pray that we always follow the will of God, and about the possibility of founding the first CS surf camp in El Salvador this year.” #everysurfer
This week’s Living Water from @christiansurfers_us ・・・ LIVING WATER People of The Sea... by JW Kaiser ⠀⠀ I have an important announcement to make! Christian Surfers will be changing its name to Christian Fishermen. ⠀⠀ In light of that change, I’d like to share some important facts about fishermen in case you’d like to stay involved with “CF”. ⠀⠀ Seven of the Twelve disciples were fishermen, so Jesus must have really liked fishermen. Being a fisherman was one of the most prolific professions during the time Jesus walked the Earth. Perhaps we should consider a career change if we're going to make a real impact on the world. Almost the entire narrative of the life of Jesus took place in and around “beach towns” where fishing was a normal pastime even if they were not professionals. We must assume that since most of the world lived within a short distance of the shore in the time of the ministry of Jesus, then it was strategic to recruit fishermen to have an impact in his ministry. ⠀⠀ On second thought, the name “Christian Fishermen” will not work. I’m sure that domain is already taken and I don’t like to clean fish after I catch them. How about we just stick to surfing! ⠀⠀ Today 80% of the world’s population lives on the coast. Surfers and families of surfers number about 12 million globally. Surfers live among the most geographically important areas in the world; near the centers of commerce and cultural influence. Surfers are brave. Surfers are bold. Surfers are flexible and mobile and are low maintenance. Also surfers are devoted and can grow to be devoted followers of Jesus. ⠀⠀ Surfers are cut out to be the modern day equivalent of what fishermen were at the time of Christ. If we would humble ourselves and follow Him, we too can be blessed to be a part of transforming the world with the Gospel just like that rag-tag group of fisherman did. In fact, the literal Greek translation of the word used to describe the fishermen that Jesus called to leave their nets and follow Him is “People of the Sea”; which works well to describe surfers. ⠀⠀ Besides, sunscreen smells better than fish guts.
Join us this week in praying for @cspanama: “Panama is a country blessed by God for surfers because despite being a small country it is surrounded by both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, allowing excellent surfing on two different coasts and the ability for us to enjoy its beautiful beaches. Pray for there be a revival in the surfers in Panama and reception of the gospel, for there to be commitment in the leaders of CS Panama to be able to give the best testimony and for there be financial support for the ministry to be able to fulfill its commitments and planned activities.” #everysurfer 📸 @surfeapanama
This week’s Living Water from @christiansurfers_us ・・・ LIVING WATER by JW Kaiser Surfing has to be the closest thing to actually walking on water. ⠀⠀ One of my favorite books is titled "If You Want To Walk On Water You Have To Get Out Of The Boat" (by John Ortberg.) The book title is in reference to Peter’s miraculous walk on water. ⠀⠀ It is obvious but true that nothing truly miraculous happens in the boat. We have to get out... out of our comfort zones; out of our routines; out of our own abilities; out of our fears; out of ourselves... if that is possible. Even if we get out of our metaphorical boats, then it is usually the case that it’s not our abilities that God will use in miraculous ways. It is our prayers. Praying people get out of the boat. ⠀⠀ Peter stepped out of the boat. Peter took a step. Peter started to sink. Then the miraculous happened. Peter realized that out of the boat is when God takes over. Peter prayed the faster prayer ever as he sank under the surface of the waves. As a surfer you may have prayed a similar prayer under the weight of a heavy wave that has tossed you around like a rag doll. It’s a simple but power prayer. Peter prayed, “Lord save me!” ⠀⠀ Jesus indeed saved him and Peter indeed walked on water. What if we got out the boats of our ordinary lives and prayed extra-ordinary prayers? Even more, what if we turned the focus of those prayers towards those around us? Get out of the boat and pray boldly for yourself “Lord save me.” And while walking on water, pray for others “Lord save them!” ⠀⠀ “If we truly love people, we will desire for them far more than it is within our power to give them, and this will lead us to prayer. Intercession is a way of loving others. In the ongoing work of the kingdom of God, nothing is more important than intercessory prayer. People today desperately need the help that we can give them. Marriages are being shattered. Children are being destroyed. Individuals are living lives of quiet desperation, without purpose or future. And we can make a difference... if we will learn to pray on their behalf.” -Richard Foster
