I grew up in a Christian family in a city called Johannesburg, South Africa, hundreds of kilometres from the ocean. At the start of my high school year my parents decided to move to Strand, Cape Town. Suddenly I lived 5 minutes from the beach. At this stage surfing was still a foreign concept to me. I had a difficult time adjusting to a new school and finding friends. Because of this I fell into a depression and started getting anxiety attacks over minor things. I lacked self-confidence and I had no desire to take part in any activities. On a sunny afternoon in the middle of winter I decided to take a walk on the beach to clear my head. There were about 10 guys in the lineup and they were going crazy – busting airs and doing big turns. In that moment I decided that I wanted to start surfing. I dragged my family to Surfers Corner in Muizenburg the very next day, where I had my first surf lesson.
After months of feeling trapped in my own mind and body I now found myself excited about something. For a long time, I believed that surfing cured me of depression and anxiety.
To uphold my new hobby, I started going for surf lessons every week at Son Surf School Strand. Mikhail and Inge Thompson own the surf school and they are also leaders within Christian Surfers. This is how I got involved into going to weekly gatherings, called CS, where a bunch of local surfers who love Jesus hang out and share their stoke with one another. I learned that Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship. God calls us to Himself. He loves us with an unending love and nothing we can ever do will separate us from His love. It was only when I realised these truths that I could commit my life to Jesus anew, and enter into a relationship with Our Father. I got baptised in 2013 alongside my Christian Surfers family in the ocean. God radically restored me. He gave me a heart for the lost, and to see His Kingdom grow.
Christian Surfers played a vital role in my spiritual growth by connecting me with people who have a passion for the same things I do – God, His Kingdom and surfing. After being a part of the CS family for 5 years I now serve alongside four other guys who are on fire for Jesus. We have a heart for the surfing community in Strand and to see the whole lineup saved and charging for Jesus. I love ministering to groms and have a deep desire to see more girls get involved in surfing.
Through the last six years in my life I underwent a lot of change. Changes in life are often a weird mix of positive and negative. In my life it started off negative and turned out to be a big positive, by the grace of God. Whenever you find yourself in a time of change I challenge you to let God use it to do work in your heart to get you to where you need to be for your next chapter of living and leading with Jesus. His work in you will bring you through to the other side with deeper humility, stronger character and greater reliance on Him.
Crecí en una familia cristiana en una ciudad que se llama Johannesburgo, en Sudáfrica, a cientos de kilómetros del océano. En el comienzo de mi primer año de la secundaria, mis padres decidieron mudarse a Strand, en Ciudad del Cabo. De repente vivo a 5 minutos de la playa. En estos días, el surf aún era un concepto ajeno para mi. Tube dificultad en ajustarme a mi nueva escuela y encontrar nuevos amigos. Debido a esto, caí en una depresión y empecé a tener ataques de ansiedad sobre detalles muy pequeños. No tenía confianza en mí misma y no tenia interés en participar en ninguna actividad. Una tarde soleada, decidí salir a la playa a pasear y aclarar mi mente. Había unas diez personas remando y haciendo locuras en las olas - haciendo voladas y maniobras en el aire. En ese momento decidí que yo quería aprender a surfear. Arrastré a mi familia a Surfers Corner, en Muizenburg al día siguiente, y tube mi primera clase de surf.
Después de meses de sentirme atrapada en mi propia mente y cuerpo, ahora me sentía emocionada por algo. Durante mucho tiempo he creído que el surf me ha sanado de la depresión y la ansiedad.
Para poder avanzar en mi nueva afición, empecé a tomar clases de surf cada semana en la escuela de surf Son Surf School Strand. Los dueños de la escuela, Mikhail e Inge Thompson, son líderes de Christian Surfers. Fue así que me involucré en las reuniones semanales, llamadas CS, donde un grupo de surfers que aman a Jesús se juntan para animarse el uno al otro. Aprendí que el cristianismo no en una religión, es una relación. Dios nos llama a Él mismo. Nos ama con un amor eterno, y no podemos hacer nada que nos separe de su amor. Fue después de aprender estas verdades, que pude comprometerme de nuevo a seguir a Jesús, y entrar en una relación con Nuestro Padre. Me bauticé en el 2013 en el océano, con mi familia de Christian Surfers. Dios me restauró radicalmente. Me dio una compasión por los perdidos y un anhelo de ver su Reino avanzar.
Christian Surfers fue una parte vital de mi crecimiento espiritual cuando me conectó con otras personas que tenían las mismas pasiones que yo - Dios, su Reino y el surf. He sido parte de la familia de Christian Surfers durante 5 años y ahora sirvo con otros cuatro jóvenes que arden con pasión por Jesús. Tenemos un deseo de ver la comunidad de surf de Strand salvados y siguiendo a Jesús. Me encanta trabajar con los jovencitos, y tengo un gran deseo de ver a mas jovencitas involucradas en el surf.
He vivido muchos cambios en mi vida en los últimos seis años. En general, los cambios pueden ser una mezcla extraña de cosas positivas y negativas. En mi vida, todo empezó negativo, pero terminó de una forma muy positiva, por la gracia de Dios. Cuando te encuentres en una etapa de cambios, te animo a que dejes que Dios lo use para obrar en tu corazón, para que llegues a donde necesites estar en tu nuevo capítulo de vida y liderazgo en Jesús. Su obra en tu vida te llevará al otro lado con una humildad más profunda, un carácter más fuerte y una dependencia en Él más grande.
