Every great adventure begins by stepping into the unknown. For Christian Surfers, that means answering the call to reach surfers in places we've never been before.

Below, Phil Williams, CS Europe's Para-Surfing and Wave Pool Ministry Lead, discusses how wave pools have provided an incredible opportunity to reach surfers. He explains how they offer Christian Surfers a unique chance to connect with surfers in uncharted spaces, miles from the nearest ocean.

Hello there!

Imagine living in a city, as a Christian Surfer and suddenly having a wave being built in your town that’ll attract 100,000 surfers every year! With wave pools springing up all over the globe, this is our current reality.

And as a Christian Surfer, it offers our movement an opportunity to reach these surfers (who in many instances live 100’s of miles from the ocean) with the hope and love of Jesus!

I have been involved in one of the first wave parks in the world, here in Bristol, United Kingdom, and I have been blown away by the opportunity it has afforded me to reach out to so many people in that community; the staff, management, lifeguards, wavemakers, photographers, other regular surfers, and spectators alike.

Sometimes I take my laptop to ‘The Wave’ to work from there, and pray for divine appointments and wait for what God has in store. I have had opportunities to share my faith in many ways and people have asked about how they could know more about a life with Christ.

I have also been able to give out many Surfers Bibles, and I’ve been privileged enough to pray with numerous people who attend these amazing community spaces.

Currently, 33 wave parks are open globally (53 including both surf lagoons and standing-wave pools), with plans to open a further 83 within the next two to three years. A growing number of inland wave spaces, like river waves in unexpected places, are also emerging.

These amazing wave parks are here to stay, and the quality is only going to get better and better. These wave parks are full of passionate surfers and hundreds of others who will soon become passionate surfers.

Go Uncharted

There’s no doubt that wave pools, standing waves and river waves offer Christian Surfers an amazing opportunity to reach surfers in uncharted locations. To spread the love of Jesus and draw these surfers into communities of Jesus-loving surfers miles from the closest ocean.

So, this is a call to prayer and action in 2026! Pray that the wave pool ministry would help us reach more surfers in these unusual and uncharted locations. And that this wave pool ministry would offer CS a chance to grow in new unexplored nations miles from the ocean.
